The event was held at the Tournament Club of Iowa and was a memorable evening of love, laughter and tears.

400 volunteers collected over 85,000 lbs of junk and debris in 8 hours!

The trash was mostly from former homeless camps, which are often abandoned in the middle of winter, when everything is snow covered and frozen to the ground.

The 2011 cleanups were conducted with full cooperation and assistance of our homeless community and the City of Des Moines.

The third annual Iowa Homeless Memorial was held on December 21, 2011 on the West Capitol Terrace at the State Capitol in recognition of those who’ve died homeless in Iowa.

An estimated 350 to 400 people shared this memorable candlelight vigil, which included music, poetry and prayer.

  • Kathi Zimpleman
  • Diana Clay
  • Tom Schenk

Both the Governor and Mayor presented Joppa with proclamations declaring December 21, 2011 as National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day in the State of Iowa and City of Des Moines.

These events are organized for the community by Joppa Outreach.

It was quite a fun evening packed with food, entertainment, and a wrapped gift under the tree for everyone in attendance who has experienced homelessness.

Homeless people typically do not get invited out much and are many times not received warmly at public events. They can become especially lonely around holidays while many of us remain busy and have multiple holiday invitations and events from which to select.
